Fetal Medicine Service

The National Maternity Hospital provides a referral service for maternal and fetal high risk pregnancies. We receive referrals from every obstetric department in the country.

The service is provided by 7 sub-specialists in Maternal Fetal Medicine, with daily fetal medicine clinics.  We have a dedicated and supportive team of fetal medicine midwives and administration staff members.

Consequently, we can usually see urgent referrals within 24-48 hours of referral.

Fetal Medicine Services include:

  • Prenatal diagnosis: First trimester screening & Fetal anomaly scanning.
  • Invasive testing: Amniocentesis, Chorionic Villis Sampling & Cordocentesis.
  • Antenatal Neonatology clinics.
  • Fetal Echocardiography: Joint Fetal medicine & Paediatric cardiology in collaboration with CHI Crumlin.
  • National Neurosurgical Clinic: in collaboration with paediatric neurosurgeons and neurosurgical nurse specialist from CHI Temple Street.
  • Surgical clinics: with CHI Crumlin & Temple St.
  • Fetal Therapy: Laser ablation for treatment for Twin to Twin transfusion, Insertion of bladder or chest shunts & Fetal blood transfusions.
  • Red Cell Isoimmunisation MDT.
  • Deep phenotyping clinic: Joint NMH Fetal medicine & Perinatal Genetics & Genomics.
  • Management of multiple pregnancy:  Complications of Monochorionic twins, higher order multiple pregnancy & laser ablation for twin to twin transfusion syndrome.
  • Placental insufficiency assessment: Assessment of Fetal growth, Maternal & Fetal Doppler studies.
  • National Placenta Accreta Spectrum MDT: Ultrasound assessment.
