Placenta Accreta Service

We provide a dedicated specialist service for women with Placenta Accreta Spectrum (PAS), offering expert, compassionate care throughout pregnancy and birth.

A multidisciplinary team works together to create personalised plans and meets monthly to review cases.

We understand that a diagnosis of Placenta Accreta Spectrum (PAS) can feel overwhelming. We offer a dedicated specialist service to offer support.

PAS refers to a range of conditions where the placenta attaches abnormally or too deeply into the lining of womb during pregnancy. Although rare, these pregnancies are high‑risk, and need specialist care for the best outcomes for you and your baby.

If PAS is suspected, you’ll be cared for at a dedicated maternity units with a special interest in PAS — The National Maternity Hospital is proud to be one of them.

We currently chair the National Placenta Accreta Spectrum Service, which brings together a highly experienced, multidisciplinary team. This includes midwives, anaesthesiologists, surgeons, fetal‑medicine specialists, physiotherapists, and radiology/interventional radiology experts. Together, they work closely to plan your pregnancy, birth, and recovery with your safety and wellbeing at the heart of every decision.

Our team meets virtually once a month to review PAS cases. These meetings ensure that every woman with PAS has a personalised plan for antenatal care and birth, shaped by the combined expertise of specialists who understand this condition deeply.

The National Placenta Accreta Service was created following recommendations in the National Guideline for Placenta Accreta Spectrum, published in 2023 by the National Women and Infants Health Programme and the Institute of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists.
