About the Organisation
The National Maternity Hospital (NMH) supports women and families before, during and after pregnancy, delivering care across a wide range of maternity and women’s health services.
We provide public, private and semi-private care and support patients at every stage of their maternity journey.
Who we are
The National Maternity Hospital is one of Ireland’s largest maternity hospitals and plays an important role in the delivery of maternity and women’s healthcare at a national level.
Our services include maternity care, gynaecology services, neonatal care and specialist care for complex or high-risk pregnancies.
In 2024, 6,858 women gave birth at NMH. Our Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), recognised as a national referral centre for complex pregnancies, premature babies, and critically ill infants, had over 1,200 admissions during the year. Outpatient activity remains significant, with nearly 74,500 attendances across maternity and specialist clinics. In addition, over 24,500 gynaecology and women’s health outpatient visits and 25,000 attendances at the Ultrasound and Fetal Medicine Unit were recorded in 2024. In 2024, more than 10,000 women were admitted for overnight care, alongside over 1,200 babies in the NICU. Our 24/7 Emergency Room supported over 13,000 women seeking urgent care.
The hospital is a key centre for the treatment of gynaecological cancer and hosts one of Europe’s largest Colposcopy Services, supported by the National Cancer Screening Service. Urogynaecology and Ambulatory Gynaecology services continue to grow in response to increasing national demand. NMH is also designated as a regional hub for the expansion of public fertility services.
Nearly 1,000 staff are employed at NMH, and the hospital is widely recognised for excellence in education and training. Our undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in medicine, midwifery, nursing, and allied health professions are nationally and internationally respected, in partnership with University College Dublin and the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. As part of the HSE Dublin and South East Health Region, NMH serves as the lead maternity hospital in the network. We are committed to sharing expertise and supporting the development of maternity, neonatal, and gynaecological care across the region.
