
Attending Fetal Medicine
We provide psychosocial support for families where there is a concern regarding the development of their baby.
We are aware that this can be a very stressful time for parents and their families and can offer support to you at this time.
Following a referral you will be offered an appointment to meet with the Medical Social Worker.
The Medical Social Worker carries out a psychosocial assessment to determine needs and can provide the following psychosocial support:

The Medical Social Worker is aware of the additional stressors faced by many families such as caring for your other children during a medically complex pregnancy, coping with a lengthy antenatal inpatient admission, travelling long distances to attend the hospital, lack of family support, previous losses or trauma, IVF journey, language barriers, financial or relationship worries.
Medical Social Workers can act as an advocate for the family and offer practical support to families including:
- Contact details and information for other specialist support groups and services as indicated.
- Information on accommodation options for families living outside of the greater Dublin area.
- Referral to and liaison with relevant support services in your local area.
- Liaison with/referral to the Medical Social Worker in local Maternity Units.
- Referral to Medical Social Worker in Paediatric Hospital.
- Information and advice on financial supports available.
- Provision of an overnight pack during an unexpected hospital admission.
- Referral to The National Maternity Hospital ‘Away from Home’ clinic for post natal check-ups for families staying in accommodation in Dublin.
- Referral to other specialist support services as indicated at The National Maternity Hospital.
