Perinatal Mental Health
The Specialist Perinatal Mental Health Service at the National Maternity Hospital is here to support you, your baby, and your family through the emotional and psychological changes that can come with pregnancy and early parenthood.
Our multidisciplinary team works closely with you to help you stay as well as possible during pregnancy and up to six months after birth.
Mental health difficulties during this time are common — up to 1 in 5 women experience challenges in pregnancy or after their baby is born. Many mild to moderate difficulties can be managed by your GP or community services. Our specialist service is here for women who need extra support because of complex mental health needs or moderate to severe illness in pregnancy and up six months postnatally.
We provide care for women who may be experiencing significant mental health difficulties, or who have a history of serious mental illness such as bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, psychosis, major depression, anxiety disorders, OCD, or eating disorders.
We work with you, your family or support person, and the healthcare professionals involved in your care to create a plan that feels safe, supportive, and right for you.
Our team can advise you on the benefits and risks of psychiatric medication during pregnancy and breastfeeding, and we offer support around your relationship with your baby. Every woman’s needs are different, so your care plan will be tailored to you. In some cases, we may recommend linking with services outside the hospital to ensure you receive the most appropriate support.
- We do not provide general counselling
- We do not offer an emergency, crisis, or walk‑in service. Patients are seen strictly by appointment only
- Emergency concerns should be directed to your local mental health services, emergency department or liaison psychiatric service
- We do not accept self‑referrals
The Referral Process
We accept referrals from midwives, obstetricians, and health and social care professionals within the Hospital. We do not accept self‑referrals or referrals directly from public health nurse.
You may be referred to the service if you are attending the Hospital for your pregnancy or have delivered here within the last six months.
Referrals are accepted for the following:
- women who need pre‑pregnancy advice about medication
- those experiencing moderate to severe perinatal mental health difficulties during pregnancy or up to six months postnatally
- women with a pre‑existing serious mental illness and a diagnosis of BPAD, Schizophrenia or any other psychosis, major depression or anxiety disorders, OCD and eating disorders
