Complex Menopause Service
Referral Information

Information on referrals for patients requiring specialist menopause and HRT management.

Complex Menopause Clinic

The Complex Menopause Service in the National Maternity Hospital was established in November 2021. The service is supported by the National Women and Infants Health Programme. It was the first publically funded specialist Menopause clinic in the Republic of Ireland that is dedicated to providing care and support to patients with complex medical conditions to manage their menopausal symptoms.

Most women can attend their GP/Practice Nurse or a Women’s Health clinic for advice and management of peri/menopause symptoms. For some, it is necessary that they see a menopause specialist for assessment and initiation of treatment. Our service is for women who have troublesome menopause symptoms with background of complex medical conditions whereby it is not recommended that HRT is commenced in primary care.

The service is delivered by Dr Deirdre Lundy (Clinical Lead) and Dr Nicola Cochrane, who are Menopause specialists, accredited by the British Menopause Society and Claire McElroy, Clinical Nurse Specialist in Menopause.

There are additional Complex Menopause services provided in the Rotunda Hospital and Coombe Hospital, Dublin, Galway University Hospital, Cork University Maternity Hospital and Nenagh General Hospital.

Criteria

Women who are eligible to attend our service must live within the HSE Dublin and South East Region (South Dublin, Wicklow, Carlow, Kilkenny, Wexford, Waterford and Tipperary South) and have a personal diagnosis or history of:

  • Estrogen dependent cancers (such as breast, endometrial, ovarian, lung, melanoma)
  • Ischemic Heart Disease
  • Venous thromboembolism
  • Stroke
  • Epilepsy
  • Active serious Liver disease
  • Immunological disease (such as SLE, HIV)
  • Premature Ovarian Insufficiency

Referral process

If you feel your patient meets the above criteria you must complete our ‘GP referral form’ which is located in the ‘Refer a Patient’ section on our website. All sections of the form must be completed and all relevant information in relation to your patient’s medical condition must be attached. Referrals can then be posted to the Gynae Outpatients Department or emailed to menopauseclinic@nmh.ie

Referrals from outside our catchment area, incomplete referrals and referrals that do not meet our clinical criteria will be rejected and returned.

Once the complete referral is received, it will be triaged by the team and the patient will be informed that that have been placed on our waiting list.

Please complete all sections of the application form fully as we will not be able to offer an appointment to your patient without this completed form.
