Health Insurance and Payment
Most women attending the Fitzwilliam Semi-Private Clinic use private health insurance to cover as much of the cost as possible. As insurance plans vary, you are advised to contact your insurer directly to ensure your cover is appropriate.
If your insurance does not cover all costs incurred at The National Maternity Hospital, you will be required to pay any remaining balance in full.
The National Maternity Hospital operates a direct payment system for inpatient charges with:
- VHI
- Laya
- Irish Life
Fees and Charges
The semi-private Consultant fee includes:
- Up to seven antenatal visits with your Consultant
- Dating and anomaly ultrasound scans
- Any other prescribed ultrasound scans

During busy periods, a bed on the Fitzwilliam Semi-Private ward cannot be guaranteed following birth. If a semi-private bed is not available, you will be accommodated on another ward until one becomes available.
Length of Stay and Insurance Cover
Health insurance providers generally cover:
- Three nights for a vaginal birth
- Five nights for a caesarean section
This includes any nights spent on the Antenatal Ward or Labour and Birthing Unit before birth.
If your medical team advises that a longer stay is medically necessary, this is generally covered by insurance, but you should confirm this directly with your insurer.

Day Case
Babies admitted to the neonatal unit take the same patient category as their mother. For claims to be fully covered, each baby must be included on the mother’s insurance policy. Babies can be added to a policy immediately after birth if not automatically covered.
