About the Fitzwilliam Semi-Private Clinic

The Fitzwilliam Semi-Private Clinic is a consultant-led antenatal clinic at The National Maternity Hospital.

Care is provided by eight Consultants and a Specialist Registrar, and the clinic welcomes women with normal, medium, or high-risk pregnancies.

If you have a high-risk pregnancy, some of your appointments may take place in a specialist clinic within the hospital. You can still choose to book your care through the Fitzwilliam Semi-Private Clinic.

Your Antenatal Care

Your antenatal care is shared between your chosen Consultant or Specialist Registrar and your GP.

  • You will usually see your chosen obstetrician for your appointments

  • If your obstetrician is on leave or responding to an emergency, you will be seen by another Consultant or Specialist Registrar

  • A midwife will be present at each visit

  • Your GP will carry out your six-week postnatal check, unless you are asked to return to the hospital

Ultrasound Scans and Monitoring

You will have:

  • A 12-week dating scan
  • An anatomy scan at 20–22 weeks
  • These scans take place at Merrion Ultrasound, located next door to the Fitzwilliam Semi-Private Clinic.
  • At each consultant visit, your baby’s wellbeing will be checked with a bedside ultrasound. Any additional scans recommended by your Consultant will also be arranged.
  • Merrion Ultrasound is a medically led, sonographer-facilitated clinic designed to offer comfort, privacy, and clear viewing of your scans.

Labour and Birth

As a patient of our semi private clinic: Your care during labour and birth will be provided by the Labour and Birthing Unit midwives. If medical assistance is required, it will be provided by the obstetric team of the day with guidance and consultation from the on call Consultant Obstetrician.

If you choose to avail of epidural pain relief, this will usually be administered by a Consultant Anaesthetist.

If you need to be admitted to the hospital before your baby is born, inpatient hospital care is provided by our hospital midwives. Obstetric decisions about your care are made by the obstetric team of the day with guidance and consultation from the on call Consultant Obstetrician. The same applies to your postnatal stay. Your baby’s day two physical examination is carried out by the Consultant Paediatrician on duty.
