Psychosexual Therapy
Psychosexual Therapy offers a safe, compassionate space to explore sexual difficulties at any age or stage of life.
Through personalised exercises and supportive guidance, you can better understand your sexual wellbeing and build confidence. The service is confidential, inclusive and tailored to your needs, whether you attend alone or with a partner.
What is Psychosexual Therapy?
Psychosexual Therapy (Sex Therapy) is a space where you can talk openly about sexual concerns in a safe, non‑judgemental environment.
Together with your therapist, you’ll explore what’s happening for you, understand the emotional and physical factors involved, and build a personalised plan to support healing and confidence.
Difficulty during sexual activities is extremely common at any age, gender and relationship stage.
Psychosexual Therapy is a specialized talk therapy focusing on the sexual issues of a person or relationship.

Why do people come to Psychosexual Therapy?
People come to us for many reasons, including:
- Difficulty with penetration — whether during sex, tampon use or gynaecological exams
- Painful intercourse
- Erectile or ejaculation issues
- Adjusting to medical conditions that affect sexual activity
- Orgasm difficulties
- Distress around intimacy
- Changes in desire or desire differences within a relationship
Sexual concerns are deeply personal — and you are not alone in experiencing them.
How the service works?
If Psychosexual Therapy is right for you and you meet the criteria for a sex therapy programme, you and your therapist will create a tailored therapy plan. You’ll receive specific exercises to try at home, which may include education, mindfulness or relaxation techniques.
You’ll meet regularly with your therapist to share your experiences openly and honestly. The role of the therapist is to support your discoveries and guide you throughout your Psychosexual journey.
Sexual wellbeing is shaped by your mind‑body connection, your past experiences and the pressures of everyday life. Therapy helps you understand these influences and move towards sexual experiences that feel comfortable, confident and authentic — not what you think you “should” be having.
FAQ
Should my partner attend?
- Yes. Sexual activities are a collaboration, and partners are encouraged to attend when possible.
Can I attend if I’m single?
- Absolutely. You can explore sexual concerns as a single person
Is the service confidential?
Yes — confidentiality is maintained under Children’s first guidelines .
Am I too old to attend?
Never. There is no age limit for understanding our psychosexual identity or enhancing quality of your sex life.
Do I need a physical exam first?
No physical exams take place in the clinic. The clinic uses a biopsychosocial approach to asses sexual issues.
To be referred to the service, you must see a clinician you trust to identify medical/biological factors contributing to your issue.
A physical exam by this clinician may be needed depending on your complaint. In some cases, due to pain, past experiences or vaginismus it may not be possible to complete an exam.
You can still attend the clinic if this is the case.
I’m afraid to talk about my issue — how do I start?
Sexual issues are extremely personal and intimate.
The team understands how personal this is and offers a compassionate, non‑judgemental space.
Are there other sex therapists in Ireland?
Yes — most psychosexual therapists in Ireland work privately. See useful links below.
Is sex therapy the same as relationship therapy?
No. If the core issue is a relationship issue rather than sexual, relationship therapy may be more appropriate.
How long does therapy last?
It is not possible to predict how long weekly/biweekly psychosexual therapy will last for. Each case will differ. Regular review dates will be set to check in with the therapy process.
Is psychosexual therapy successful?
Like all therapies available, Psychosexual Therapy may be successful for some and unsuccessful for others.
Best outcomes from therapy programmes are usually from individuals and couples who are motivated and committed to the regular attendance of therapy and completion of exercises set aside for them.
