Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at National Maternity Hospital

We understand that having a baby in the Neonatal Unit can be an incredibly worrying time. Our dedicated team of specialists is here to provide the very best care for your baby, and to support you and your family throughout.

Our NICU is a recognised centre of excellence, accepting referrals for premature and acutely ill newborns from across Ireland. Babies may need to come to the Neonatal Unit for a number of reasons, including:

  • Premature birth or low birth weight requiring careful monitoring
  • Infection, jaundice, or breathing difficulties
  • Cardiac or surgical problems needing specialist care

The unit was fully rebuilt and renovated in 2016 and is located on the first floor of the NMH. Our 35 beds are spread across three wards and an isolation area. Your baby will be cared for by Consultant Neonatologists, Registrars, Senior House Officers, and a highly skilled team of specialist Neonatal Nurses, supported by the most advanced monitoring and care technology available.
