Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at National Maternity Hospital
We understand that having a baby in the Neonatal Unit can be an incredibly worrying time. Our dedicated team of specialists is here to provide the very best care for your baby, and to support you and your family throughout.
Our NICU is a recognised centre of excellence, accepting referrals for premature and acutely ill newborns from across Ireland. Babies may need to come to the Neonatal Unit for a number of reasons, including:
- Premature birth or low birth weight requiring careful monitoring
- Infection, jaundice, or breathing difficulties
- Cardiac or surgical problems needing specialist care
The unit was fully rebuilt and renovated in 2016 and is located on the first floor of the NMH. Our 35 beds are spread across three wards and an isolation area. Your baby will be cared for by Consultant Neonatologists, Registrars, Senior House Officers, and a highly skilled team of specialist Neonatal Nurses, supported by the most advanced monitoring and care technology available.
The ACORN Team
In November 2023, we were proud to launch the ACORN (Allied Care of at Risk Newborns) therapy programme. Delivered by a team of healthcare professionals with specialist expertise in preterm development, the ACORN team works alongside our Neonatal Medical and Nursing Team to support the development and wellbeing of babies in our NICU.
Baby Outpatient Clinic
Some babies need to continue their care with us after going home. If your baby needs a follow-up appointment, we’ll arrange this before discharge where possible, or send the details to you at home.
To help things run smoothly, our clinic works on a strict appointment system. If you can’t make your slot, please let us know as early as possible so it can be offered to another family.
We’ll send you a text reminder ahead of your appointment just make sure we have your correct mobile number at discharge.

Emergency Referrals
If you have any concerns about your baby at home, your first point of contact should be your Public Health Nurse or GP. If they feel your baby needs to be seen at NMH, they can issue a referral and we will arrange an appointment, or in an emergency, you are welcome to come directly to the hospital.
Outside of clinic hours, the hospital is not funded to provide a formal emergency service, but if you’re worried and unsure what to do, please don’t hesitate to call us. We’ll always do our best to advise you on the right course of action.
