Perineal Clinic

The Perineal Clinic provides specialist care for women who have experienced a third or fourth degree tear during childbirth. Pregnant women with a history of a third degree tear in a previous delivery may also be referred for assessment.

What to Expect at Your Appointment

During your clinic visit, you may have:

  • An assessment of bowel symptoms
  • A perineal examination
  • An endo-anal ultrasound (an internal scan of the back passage)

Following your assessment, your care team will discuss the results with you and talk through considerations for future deliveries where relevant.

Further Assessment and Referral

The clinic works closely with the Pelvic Floor Centre at St Michael’s Hospital, Dún Laoghaire. If needed, you may be referred onwards for further specialist assessment.

How Referrals Work

Referrals are accepted from GPs and consultants from other hospital clinics.
