Mirena Coil Clinic

Specialist coil insertion and review for women referred by their GP when this service is not available in general practice.

This clinic is led by experienced GPs under consultant supervision.
Referral from your GP is required to attend.
You must bring your prescribed coil device to your appointment.
Follow-up care after insertion is provided by your GP.

The GP-Led Mirena Coil Clinic is run by highly experienced GPs with a special interest in women’s health, working under the supervision of a Consultant Gynaecologist.

Who Is This Clinic For?

You may be referred to this clinic if:

  • You are under 45 years of age
  • You have a history of heavy regular bleeding
  • Your GP has recommended an intrauterine coil device (IUCD) and this service is not available in your GP’s practice
  • Missing coil threads
  • Difficult or unsuccessful insertion of a Mirena, Kyleena, Jaydess, or copper coil

Preparing For Your Appointment

To ensure your appointment can go ahead as planned, you must bring the mirena coil device with you as devices are not supplied by the Hospital.

Your GP will advise which device is most suitable and provide a prescription, which should be filled at your local pharmacy before your appointment.

To avoid any risk of pregnancy, please do not have unprotected sex for three weeks before your appointment, unless you are using a hormonal contraceptive.

After Your Appointment

Follow-up care after coil insertion is provided by your GP. An aftercare information leaflet is available.
