Colposcopy

Colposcopy is a specialist follow-up clinic for women referred after an abnormal cervical screening result.

Colposcopy is for further investigation after abnormal cervical screening results.
Referral must come from your smear-taker.
Appointments are scheduled once a referral is received and reviewed.
The clinic operates Monday–Friday during normal hours.

Cervical Check and Colposcopy

Most women screened as part of the National Cervical Screening Programme will only need regular cervical screening (smear) tests. A small number (about 2–5 %) require further investigation or treatment through a colposcopy service, and The National Maternity Hospital is one of the clinics that provide this care.

What is colposcopy and why you may be referred

Colposcopy is a specialist outpatient examination used when you have had an abnormal screening result that needs closer assessment. Your clinician will use a magnified view to look at the cervix and decide whether further treatment or monitoring is needed.

You may be referred for colposcopy if your cervical screening (smear) test shows:

  • A single positive HPV test with any grade of abnormal cells, or
  • Two positive HPV tests one year apart with normal cytology.

Referral Criteria

Appointments are only made after a referral letter is received from the healthcare professional who took your smear.

These referrals are reviewed by a clinician, and an appropriate appointment date will be sent to you. Your referring centre will also be notified of the appointment.

A good referral should include:

  • A copy of your smear results
  • Any previous colposcopy history
  • Your contact details, including mobile number
  • Any special requirements you may have (e.g., interpreting services)
  • If information is missing, the referral may be returned.

The Gynaecology Outpatient Clinic is located on the ground floor of the main hospital building. Please note that while you are allocated to a particular consultant, another member of that consultant’s team may see you on the day.
