Your Gynaecology Appointment
Know what to bring and what to expect at your outpatient gynaecology appointment.
Before Your Appointment
Please read your appointment letter carefully, it may include specific instructions for your visit.
If you think you need help during your visit (e.g. a translator or disability support), let the clinic know before you attend.
Please bring the following with you on the day:
- Your appointment letter
- Your GP’s details and telephone number
- Your medical history
- Any medication details
- Any recent results (such as scans or blood tests) you have been given
The Gynaecology Outpatient Department is located on the ground floor of the main hospital building. Please note that while you are allocated to a particular consultant, another member of that consultant’s team may see you on the day.
At Your Appointment
You are welcome to bring a support person with you. Patients under 16 must attend with a parent or guardian.
Appointment times are a guide only. Occasionally delays happen due to emergencies or unexpected events. Staff will do their best to notify you and rearrange your appointment if needed.
At your first appointment you can expect:
- A discussion about your reason for attending
- Questions about your health, including medical history, sexual health, medications, and family history
- An examination if needed, which might include a pelvic or vaginal exam
- Samples for testing if required (for example, swabs for infection)
Care Planning and Follow-up
A plan of care will be discussed with you during your appointment. This may include:
- Changes in medication
- Further investigation such as an ultrasound scan
- Procedures or surgery
- Referral to another service
After your appointment, a letter will be sent to your GP with details of your visit, including your care plan and any recommendations.
Test Results
If samples (blood, urine, or swabs) were sent for testing, you will only be contacted if treatment is needed.
Please note that results are not given out by phone.
Results from other tests (e.g., ultrasound scans) will be shared with you at a follow-up appointment, or the consultant may write to your GP about them.
