Ambulatory Gynaecology / Hysteroscopy

Outpatient gynaecology care where minor procedures and assessments are done while you’re awake, helping diagnose and treat a range of conditions without a hospital stay.

Minor gynaecology procedures can be done without general anaesthesia.
Referred patients may be seen for outpatient hysteroscopy.
See and treat approach may include biopsy or removal of small growths.
Continue GP care if symptoms change while waiting.

For many patients it is possible to have minor gynaecology procedures carried out while awake in an outpatient setting — this is called ambulatory care. The benefits of ambulatory care include avoiding a hospital stay, avoiding general anaesthesia, and a faster recovery time than traditional theatre procedures.

What is an Outpatient Hysteroscopy (OPH)?

An outpatient hysteroscopy is a diagnostic procedure to examine the inside of your womb (uterus). A small, thin camera (hysteroscope) is passed through the vagina and cervix (neck of the womb) to allow your healthcare provider to look for any problems that may need further investigation or treatment.

Where possible, the clinic aims to provide a ‘see and treat’ service: your healthcare provider may carry out a procedure at the same appointment. This might include taking a small sample (biopsy) or removing small polyps if they are found.

Why You May Be Referred

You may be referred to the Ambulatory Gynaecology Clinic for outpatient hysteroscopy if you are experiencing or need assessment for:

  • Abnormal vaginal bleeding
  • Removal or insertion of an intrauterine coil device (IUCD)
  • Assessment or removal of polyps or fibroids found on ultrasound scan
  • Fertility or miscarriage investigations

While you wait for your appointment, continue to attend your GP for advice. If new or worsening symptoms develop, your GP can send an updated referral requesting that your appointment be expedited.

How Referrals Work

Referrals are accepted from GPs and consultants from other hospital clinics.
