Midwifery Placements and Work Experience
The National Maternity Hospital supports midwifery education through UCD’s four‑year BSc Midwifery programme. While additional work‑experience placements cannot be offered, limited Erasmus and short observational elective placements are available through approved channels. Elective applicants must provide programme registration, insurance, immunity evidence, and required training. All Erasmus applications must be submitted via UCD, and no accommodation is provided.
Clinical work experience (Pre-Nursing / Transition Year)
At present, The National Maternity Hospital is unable to facilitate clinical work experience placements for:
- Pre-Nursing (QQI/FETAC) students
- Transition Year students
Due to resource constraints, applications for these placements cannot be accommodated and will not be responded to.
Midwifery Erasmus placements
We facilitate a small number of Erasmus placements for midwifery students through our academic partner, University College Dublin (UCD).
To be considered, all Erasmus applications must be submitted through UCD. Applications sent directly to The National Maternity Hospital cannot be processed or responded to.
Elective midwifery placements (non-practice)
We occasionally offer elective observational placements for undergraduate and postgraduate midwifery students. These placements allow you to observe practice in a busy maternity hospital, helping you deepen your understanding of midwifery care.
To request an elective placement, you must provide:
• Evidence of registration in an approved midwifery programme, confirmed by your course supervisor
• Proof of university insurance
• Evidence of immunity status and completion of essential training
Due to insurance requirements, elective placements are observational only and typically limited to one week.
